CATEL Eager to Become 3rd Cellular Communications Operator in Azerbaijan
CATEL, an Azerbaijani-US joint venture (JV) has applied to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies to operate as a cellular communications provider in Azerbaijan.
Minister Ali Abbasov told journalists that the JV's appeal will be considered soon.
The Government of Azerbaijan and US OMSL Company hold equal shares in CATEL, which was established in 1997. Currently, there are two cellular communications providers in the country. Israel's GTIB-96 Company has become the full owner of shares in Bakcell Joint Venture, which services 30% of the local market. The privatization of 36.4% of state-owned shares in Azercell Telecom Joint Venture, a leading cellular communications provider in the country, will be completed by the end of this year. Azercell will be the largest enterprise in the country to be privatized.
